The Baltic University Programme (BUP)
at the University of Applied Sciences Zittau/Görlitz

The role of Universities

Universities, where new generations receive their education, have a key role in the changes towards a democratic, peaceful and sustainable development in the region. There is a long tradition of internationalism within the academic world and today the universities also address the general public, and cooperate with authorities and companies when special competence and skills are needed. These roles of the universities are needed even more after the dramatic political and societal changes that have taken place in our region after 1990.

The participating universities include classical universities, as well as universities of technology, agriculture, culture, economics, pedagogics etc. All countries within or partly within the Baltic Sea drainage basin are represented: Belarus, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Germany, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Russia and Sweden and more marginally Czech Republic, Norway, Slovakia, and Ukraine.
